medicare information
MEDICARE basics
Medicare is a Federal health insurance program for individuals who are aged 65 and over and for individuals who are disabled. Medicare’s eligibility is not determined by income, however individuals can pay a higher premium based on income and low-income individuals may be eligible for additional assistance.
Beneficiaries may receive their Medicare coverage either through the Federal Government (Original Medicare) or through a Private Health Plan (Medicare Advantage Plans).
Original Medicare
Original Medicare contains 2 parts: Hospital Insurance - Part A and Medical Insurance - Part B that cover certain medical services and supplies in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and other health care facilities.
Your red, white, and blue Medicare card shows whether you have Part A and/or Part B and the dates your coverage begins. If you have Original Medicare, you’ll use the card to get your Medicare-covered services.
hospital insurance - part a
Part A (Hospital Insurance) helps cover: • Inpatient care in a hospital • Inpatient care in a skilled nursing facility (not custodial or long-term care) • Hospice care • Home health care • Inpatient care in a religious non-medical health care institution
medical insurance - part b
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) helps cover medically necessary doctor’s services, outpatient care, home health services, ambulance, durable medical equipment, mental health services, and other medical services. Part B also covers many preventive services.
medicare advantage plans - part c
Medicare Part C regulates Medicare Advantage Plans. These plans are provided byprivate insurance carriers and their benefits must cover Part A (except Hospice),Part B benefits, and can include coverage for prescription drugs. Members must reside within the Plan’s service area. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer additional services such as dental, vision, and hearing benefits.
Medicare Advantage plans are more like traditional health insurance coverage using HMO, PPO, and POS networks. While some Medicare Advantage plans require members to use their in-network facilities and physicians, other Medicare Advantage plans offer both in-network and out-of-network benefits.
prescription drug plans (pdp) - part d
Original Medicare does not cover prescription drugs. Medicare Part D are Prescription Drug Plans (ppd) that cover certain prescription medications, diabetic supplies, and vaccines. These plans are run by private insurance companies that follow rules set by Medicare.
medigap- supplemental coverage
Original Medicare coverage does not cover all the cost associated for covered health care services or supplies. Beneficiaries are responsible for deductibles, co-pays, and coinsurance. MediGap insurance policies sold by private companies, canhelp pay for the remaining health care cost.
MediGap policies work with Original Medicare only. Some MediGap policies offer additional benefits not covered by Original Medicare - such as, extra inpatient days, or emergency treatment during foreign travel.
